Day 4, Spearfish Canyon.

Spearfish Canyon

Spearfish Canyon.

We took a loop through colorful Spearfish Canyon to approach the town from the south. Touring rock walls dressed with pines clinging to cracks and shelves. Then a dirt road. We walked to Roughlock Falls, named for the technique used to lock a wagon’s wheels, hitch the horses to the back and roughlock (slide) down the steep slopes found in this territory.

We were halted by road works some miles from Spearfish by a burly guy shoving a STOP sign in front of us. He strolled around the car and informed us we had to wait for the pilot vehicle to guide us over the next few miles. We waited about ten minutes. Up the hill came a truck with an enormous sign on the back proclaiming FOLLOW ME. We did. Only the road bed was laid. We weaved back and forth across all four lanes picking the best path. Behind us like a snake was a string of vehicles.
