Day 3, Crazy Horse.

Sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski was invited by Lakota Chief Standing Bear to carve Crazy Horse, an Indian warrior who was instrumental in defeating Gen. Custer. Work began on the mountain in 1949. The image is huge, many times larger than Mt. Rushmore. In 50 years only the face and top surface of the arm are complete. The memorial is now a foundation for Indian improvement.

Crazy Horse

The carving model shows Crazy Horse on horseback arm outstretched, hair flying.

We took a short open bus ride close to the foot of the mountain where blasting continues.

There is no time table for completion of the sculpture. The four faces at Mt. Rushmore are no bigger than Crazy Horse’s flowing hair.

Crazy Horse Model

“That creature is a Ground Hog?” Ginger in color, short of leg, and almost as wide as he is long with a pathetic tail.

The beaver’s dam was interesting. We had never seen one before.
