Day 13, Lebanon Mine.

We break into groups of 20 and follow our tour guide into a series of wooden huts. We learn how hard mining was. Miners had only steel bars and a hammer to punch holes in the granite for dynamite, with only a candle for light. It was a short life. Later they had mechanical drills and water to suppress dust.

Now the mine. We don hard hats and enter the mine. It is cold, just 46ºF. We walk on wooden boards placed between the rail tracks for mine cars. Water pours out along a ditch to our right. I bang my hard hat on the roof. I wondered why they all had scratches.

I crouch. Even with electric light bulbs it is dark. We go about 500ft into the mountain and stop to see where side veins were removed. It took ten years to dig (and blast) this far.

Our guide then lights a candle and turns off the electric light. How could two miners see to drill, one holding the bar, the other wielding an eight pound hammer for 10 hours, 6 days a week, and earning only $3 a day?

We have to walk up a steep grade to return to the train. We both puff. I had noticed before at elevations over 8,000ft, my breathing increased.

Hi ho, hi ho, its off to get some silver we go…..
Don’t crash that hat!
